Frankie J. Alvarez

Frankie J. Alvarez is an actor and writer from Miami, FL. He is best known as the series regular role of Agustín Lanuez on the HBO hit show LOOKING and LOOKING: THE MOVIE alongside Jonathan Groff, Russell Tovey, Raúl Castillo, and Murray Bartlett. His performance as Agustín earned him praise from critics and a nomination for the Imagen Foundation Award's Best Supporting Actor in 2014. He had two films released in the fall of 2021: THE DRUMMER, an indie about Iraqi War veterans against the war where he stars opposite Danny Glover, and VANDAL, a film about graffiti writers in Miami opposite Danny Zovato and Otmara Marrero, directed by JD Freixas. He can also be seen as Older John in the award-winning indie ROCKAWAY, written and directed by John J Budion. He plays ‘Frankie' in Pepper Binkley and delaVega’s web series IT’S FREEZING OUT THERE about 35 year-old Pepper’s quest to freeze her eggs and prepare for motherhood in a modern world, streaming now on VIMEO. A bilingual Juilliard-trained actor, Frankie previously recurred on SMASH and BLINDSPOT and has guest-starred on LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, FANTASY ISLAND, THE BLACKLIST, NEW AMSTERDAM, LAW & ORDER: SVU, THE BRIDES (pilot), CONTROVERSY (pilot), MADAM SECRETARY, and THE GOOD WIFE.

He also has a strong theatre presence, most recently as Ron in Dustin Wills' multiple Lortel-nominated production of John J. Caswell’s Wet Brain, a co-production between MCC and Playwright’s Horizons. He was Theo Van Gogh in the world premiere of Kimber Lee’s to the yellow house at La Jolla Playhouse. He was part of the two-week workshop of NYTW's Othello opposite Daniel Craig and David Oyelowo, directed by Sam Gold. He was featured as host ‘Flaco Raphael’ in Those Lost Boys: The Ten Year Reunion, a musical he co-wrote about an indie rock band who got too big too soon, co-created with friends at Ars Nova. While attending Juilliard, Alvarez appeared in numerous shows, most notably as Travis in The Americans: Paris, TX, Murk in Savage in Limbo, and Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream. He received the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play at the 2010 Midtown International Theatre Festival for The Tragedie of Cardenio. After spending the 2011 season at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (Claudio, Measure for Measure; Lucius/Metellus Cimber, Julius Caesar), he was hand-picked to play the titular role in the Asolo Repertory Theatre's production of Hamlet: Prince of Cuba, a Spanish and English-language repertory adaptation of the famed Shakespeare play, set in 19th century Havana. Other regional theatre credits include Sebastian in the world premiere of twenty50 at Denver Theatre Center, directed by Henry Godiñez; Taviano Jr/ Taviano Sr in the world premiere of Nilo Cruz' Bathing In Moonlight at the McCarter Theatre, directed by Emily Mann; and Confederate soldier Caleb in Meredith McDonough's production of The Whipping Man at Actors Theatre of Louisville.

Alvarez has narrated several audiobooks, including Justin Torres' "We the Animals”, Héctor Tobar's "The Barbarian Nurseries”, and Sebastian Rotella's "Triple Crossing”, and was featured on the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's audio recording of "Measure for Measure.”
